After launching its Software-Defined Secure Network (SDSN) portfolio in 2016, Juniper Networks is delivering on its promise to support additional security vendors on the platform as it makes better use of cloud-hosted resources in malware detection and prevention.

Ken O’Kelly has been a key consultant in Juniper Networks; UK and Ireland security business for the past four and a half years. He previously held various roles (latterly as a security architect) during a 14 year stint with Imtech ICT.

Ken tells Axians about Juniper’s latest software defined security network (SDSN) solution and how it will make life easier for  IT departments tasked with controlling network access for thousands of users.

Q: What is Juniper’s software defined security network (SDSN)?

SDSN is all about changing how you build the network. Traditionally organisations have tended to build security into the perimeter and everything outside that perimeter is untrusted and everything inside it is trusted. That is a bit of a challenge these days given that we all take our laptops and smartphones outside of that trusted barrier when we go home, where malware can infect them and vulnerabilities can be compromised. We then bring the device back inside the network perimeter and now it is trusted again and that gives any threat carte blanche to get around the network.

TalkTalk is well known for the voice and data connectivity services it offers to UK consumers, but it has been quietly building a flexible, high capacity IP network which also accommodates increasing numbers of business customers.

Revenue for TalkTalk Business accounted for over 30% of the £1.8bn total in the financial year ending March 2016, up 5% on the previous year and driven largely by growth in demand for data products, next generation voice services and broadband connections delivered by both its direct channel and wholesale partners.

In November 2015, Juniper Networks unveiled its Cloud CPE (Customer Premise Equipment) solution in order for service providers to host services from a distributed network function virtualisation (NFV) platform. The Cloud CPE solution lays the foundations for service providers to speed up application and service provisioning for their customers.

This proposed acquisition of BTI Systems looks like good news for Juniper Networks from a number of different perspectives. For one, BTI is not short of customers – its website lists a total of 380 including data centre specialists Equinix and Interxion and cloud hosting company Rackspace.

Leading network systems integrator Axians has been selected by Scottish-based Internet services provider Commsworld to deliver ultra-fast 10-gigabit Internet connectivity as part of a major upgrade to its Fluency network, making this the biggest single investment in the network to date. The additional bandwidth provided for Commsworld puts the company in an advantageous position to capitalise on the continued shift towards a digital economy.

It is obvious from the noises being made by its senior executives that Juniper wants to be known as a disruptor - a shining example of a forward looking company ready and willing to embrace the realities of an SDN/NFV market that values virtualised software more than networking hardware.
